Johnson in 2008 to join the network and appear on ESPN and ABC as a studio and gaming analyst.
"I love ESPN. Unfortunately, due to the nature of my schedule and other commitments, I don't feel confident that I can continue to input the time it takes to thrive in my role," Johnson said in a statement. "I always feel a strong connection ESPN family, I very much like to work with them."
Deadspin reported on Thursday, Johnson has become frustrated, in the past year, ESPN's bill simmons has controlled performance.
"This is now simmons," a source told ESPN website.
Simmons, who also as Grantland editor, editor in chief, joined ESPN television coverage in 2012, just happened to be in Boston locals and vocal opponent of Johnson's former team, the Los Angeles lakers.
"I feel like shows is the biggest problem in the past few years, everyone hung on every word of the magic," simmons said in an interview: "entertainment weekly" last year. "No one to challenge him."
An active merchants since retiring in 1991, Johnson, part of the ownership of the Los Angeles dodgers group, also run a production company, in addition to have several cinemas and restaurants.
ESPN recently hired former 76 ers coach and former NBC commentator doug Collins joining network covered in basketball. Doris burke, another ESPN vet, will also help "countdown" in the NBA.
