Whether cellphone use causes cancer is an ongoing question with, as yet, incomplete answers. But a new study may shed light on the subject with the finding of "oxidative stress" in the saliva of cellphone users.

The experiment, led by Yaniv Hamzany, an ear, nose and throat specialist with Tel Aviv University's Sackler Faculty of Medicine, compared the saliva of 20 heavy cellphone users (those who spoke on their cellphones an average of 30 hours per month) with the saliva of 20 individuals, most of whom are deaf and either don't use a cellphone or use it for non-verbal functions like texting. The results: The heavy cellphone users showed more signs of oxidative stress.

What does that term mean? Essentially, cell damage. More specifically, it's a molecular imbalance between antioxidants and pro-oxidants, or free radicals. Free radicals are a natural byproduct of metabolism but are also linked with aging and, when they outnumber the antioxidants, cell damage occurs.

Tasked with restoring the health and credibility of Iran’s Islamic system after eight years of the often-tumultuous presidency of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Rohani called on divine guidance to help him solve Iran’s problems. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei also called for “maximum cooperation” and support for Rohani’s government from all of Iran’s political factions at a smaller ceremony on Saturday at which Khamenei officially bestowed his endorsement.

But in a reminder this week of who wields ultimate authority in the Islamic Republic, Khamenei also vetoed some of Rohani’s initial cabinet choices. Some of those he rejected served under reformist President Mohammad Khatami, one of the few senior Iranian politicians not to take part in inauguration events, or criticized Khamenei’s violent crackdown on street protests in 2009. Still, through negotiation, Rohani has presented an inclusive cabinet of experienced technocrats who span much of Iran's political spectrum.

“The balance of power has not changed. The Supreme Leader remains the supreme leader, he’s the final arbiter. But he is not as powerful as he was before,” Nazanin Ansari, the diplomatic editor of Kayhan London newspaper, told BBC World Service Radio. “He is a candidate that is seen inside Iran who has the best chance to take the Islamic Republic out of its current quagmire. And in the West, he is certainly viewed as someone who can open the doors. But he has to prove that he can.”

ROHANI'S WORDS

Rohani repeatedly referred to his government as one of “hope and prudence" and said that he would not shy away from tackling “shortcomings and deficiencies.”

“The respected people of Iran voted for moderation and distancing from extremism,” said Rohani, standing at the flower-bedecked podium inside Iran’s cavernous and futuristic pyramid-style parliament building. “The threats will be reduced, and the opportunities must be increased. So moderation insists on moral values, and patience, and compromise.”

Those were all attributes in short supply during the presidency of Mr. Ahmadinejad, whose record was harshly criticized even by fellow hardline conservatives during the campaign leading to the June 14 vote. Running as a centrist and promising reform Rohani got the backing of Mr. Khatami and former President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani. The new president trounced five conservative candidates and won a surprise first-round victory with just over 50 percent of the vote.

The ascent of Rohani reflects a “rising rationality and a big tendency toward moderation” in Iran, says a Tehran analyst who asked not to be named. “Radicalism is no longer accepted in society.”

Yet it remains unclear how that dynamic will affect nuclear talks, or how far Rohani will be able to recalibrate Iran’s approach with the rest of the world. Khamenei has said in recent weeks that he has not blocked nuclear talks or dealing with the US, but that past experience makes him pessimistic because “Americans are untrustworthy, irrational and dishonest.”

Rohani has a PhD from Scotland, and the candidate he named today for foreign minister – Mohammad Javad Zarif, Iran’s former United Nations ambassador – was educated at the University of Denver. 

PRESIDENTIAL LIMITS

While recent Iranian presidents have done much to shape Iran’s political space – and have been able to convince Khamenei to move one way or another – they have also always been subject to any limitations Khamenei decided to impose upon them. 

“Over the past two decades, Khamenei has developed several mechanisms to control the presidency and other democratic institutions,” writes Mehdi Khalaji, an Iran specialist at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, in an analysis this week. “Tensions between the president and Supreme Leader are inherent in the structure of the regime, regardless of personality or ideology.”

Still, many of the steps that Rohani vows to take are those that Khamenei will share, at least for now after the Ahmadinejad era saw direct challenges to the leader’s own authority.

And today Rohani had his own indirect reminder for Khamenei when he quoted the leader of Iran’s 1979 Islamic revolution, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, as saying that “everything must be based on the people’s vote. That’s the benchmark and the yardstick.”

HARARE (Reuters) - A Zimbabwean election commissioner has resigned, citing doubts about the integrity of results showing a big win for President Robert Mugabe's ZANU-PF party but dismissed as a fraud-riddled farce by his main challenger.

Mkhululi Nyathi said he quit the nine-member Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) over the way it managed the presidential and parliamentary vote held on Wednesday. His resignation is likely to add to the dispute over the election both inside and outside Zimbabwe.

The vote, which looks certain to extend 89-year-old Mugabe's 33-year rule in the southern African nation, passed off peacefully and received broad approval from African observers.

Africa's oldest leader, Mugabe has governed the former British colony, then known as Rhodesia, since independence in 1980.

Mugabe's main rival, Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, has denounced the July 31 election as a "huge farce", alleging massive rigging by ZANU-PF. Zimbabwe's largest domestic observer group has also called the elections "seriously compromised"

"While throughout the whole process I retained some measure of hope that the integrity of the whole process could be salvaged along the way, this was not to be," Nyathi said in a resignation letter seen by Reuters on Saturday.

Contacted by telephone, Nyathi declined to discuss his concerns in detail.

Tsvangirai's Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) said on Friday it could take to the streets to challenge ZANU-PF's claim of a landslide victory, made less than 24 hours after the polls had closed on Wednesday.

Results for the parliamentary vote released so far by the ZEC show that ZANU-PF will have a two-thirds majority that would allow it to make constitutional changes. Zimbabwe state media is also reporting Mugabe is poised for a resounding win.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission has until Monday to release the official results of the presidential vote.

SERIOUS FLAWS ALLEGED

Tsvangirai has called on the African Union and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to investigate the vote, calling it "null and void" and "not credible".

But he faces an uphill struggle to convince the regional bodies, as their observers have already endorsed the election as free and peaceful, while acknowledging minor problems.

Western observers were kept out by Harare, and independent domestic monitors have described the vote as deeply flawed by registration problems that may have disenfranchised up to a million people. This includes the lack of availability of an updated voters' roll, as required by law.

SADC observers have urged Tsvangirai to accept the result. They expressed relief that the elections have so far avoided the kind of violence that marred a disputed vote in 2008. Then, 200 MDC supporters were killed by ZANU-PF supporters.

Western rejection of the regional African verdict on the election could stir tensions with the continent. But acceptance of Mugabe's victory will be criticised in countries that say he is a despot guilty of rights abuses and ruining the economy.

Britain, a sharp critic of Mugabe in the past, said it was concerned that Zimbabwe had not enacted important electoral reforms before the vote.

The U.S. government, which has imposed sanctions against Mugabe, said "a peaceful and orderly election day does not by itself guarantee a free and fair outcome".

The European Union, which relaxed some sanctions earlier this year after a new Zimbabwe constitution was approved in a referendum, has said it is too early to assess the election's fairness and that it is waiting for the definitive results.

Given the sanctions, the view from the West is key to the future of Zimbabwe's economy, which is still struggling with the aftermath of a decade-long slump and hyperinflation that ended in 2009 when the worthless Zimbabwe dollar was scrapped.
